Sonny Grant is Tlingit of the Kaagwaantaan (Wolf) clan from the Chilkat Valley in Klukwan, born and raised in Juneau. Great grandson to Jenny Thlunaut of Klukwan–master Chilkat Blanket weaver; grandson to Austin Hammond of Haines, Lukaax.adi, Sockeye clan—Chief Daanaawaak of the Raven House; grandson to Willie Grant of Kake, son to Edward Grant Sr. (Raven-Sockeye clan) of Juneau. My father and grandfathers taught me to remember the stories and the traditional ways of life as a Tlingit. I apprentice with master sculptor Simon Koonook, an Inupiaq Eskimo from Point Hope, Alaska.  Sonny works with soapstone, serpentine, pipestone, alabaster, and marble… also bone, ivory, and wood.
